in summer Dolomedes sulfureus (Pisauridae) [Japanese name : io-iro hashiri-gumo]
These spiders usually wait for their prey on grass, on the edges of ponds or streams. And they run over the surface of ponds and streams. They are known to capture small fish and frogs. The mother carries egg sacs around their jaws. Later, at the tip of a plant, they spin a substantial nursery web in which the young hatch. The mother stands guard over the young until they are old enough to look out for themselves. The length is 20-28 mm. It is found throughout Japan. |
